Teen struck by car in Md. is in critical condition

OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County Police say a teenager hit by a car on St. Barnabus Road is in critical condition.

The collision happened at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday. Police say a 17-year-old girl was struck while attempting to cross out of the crosswalk near the Beltway.

Police tell us the driver and vehicle stayed on the scene.

Shots fired near Potomac High School

OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police have released details about a reported shooting near Potomac High School on Wednesday morning.

According to police, at approximately 9:19 a.m. in the 1400 block of Southview Drive a caller reported seeing two shooting suspects heading toward the school. Police recommended that the school be placed on lockdown.

Police tell us that is when a student texted a family member "mentioning the lockdown and surmising there may be a gunman in the school." That family member then called a police station to say she had information that a gunman was in the classroom and that students were in danger.

Police investigating fatal Oxon Hill crash

OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County police are investigating a fatal crash in Oxon Hill, Md.

Officials say 27-year-old Jerry Garris, Jr., of the 600 block of Mace Drive in Fort Washington, Md., was killed early Sunday morning when he struck a tree while driving an SUV.

Police were called to the 8800 block of Oxon Hill Road at 3 a.m. for the report of the crash. Preliminary investigation reveals Garris was heading northbound on Oxon Hill Road when, for reasons which remain unclear, his SUV veered to the left, crossed the southbound lane and left the roadway.

The vehicle struck and tree and Garris, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators are looking into whether speed played a role in the crash.

Police investigate possible weather-related death

OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Police are investigating a possible weather-related death in Maryland.

The man's body was found behind a business around 10:00 am, at the 4700 block of Allentown Road. Initial evidence reveals there was no foul play. Officials are looking into if cold weather played a role in the death.

2 men charged in armed bank robbery

COLUMBIA, Md. (WUSA9) -- Two men face multiple charges after an armed bank robbery in Columbia this past weekend.

Howard County police say 23-year-old Calvin Abney in Oxon Hill and 28-year-old Richard Abney of Capitol Heights are charged with armed robbery, robbery, assault, theft, reckless endangerment, auto theft and a handgun violation following the robbery at the PNC Bank.

Police say one man walked into the bank in the 10400 block of Little Patuxent Parkway at approximately 9:50 a.m. He had a handgun and announced a robbery. A bank employee gave him cash and he fled, say police. Police say a second man was acting as a lookout and both men took off in a stolen vehicle.

Officers arrived in the area and searched until 10:20 a.m. when police say they found both suspects in a wooded area behind River Meadows Drive.

Both suspects are being held at the Howard County Detention Center on $750,000 bond.

Officials: Man sentenced to 105 years in prison

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) -- A man has been sentenced to 105 years in prison for numerous violent crimes since 1977, officials said. 

Larry Offutt, 59 was found guilty today, of 'robbery with a dangerous weapon, first degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime and possession of a firearm after being convicted of a disqualifying crime', police said. 

He has been involved in various crimes dating back to 1977. Last January, while robbing a Boost Mobile store in Oxon Hill, Offutt used his hand to push open the door. Detectives were able to track him down using fingerprints, police said.
