Man convicted of killing Md. Clarion Hotel employee

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA9) – A Washington D.C. man was found guilty Wednesday of killing an employee at an Oxon Hill hotel during a robbery in 2013.

Deandre Weems was convicted of shooting Clarion Hotel employee Jessie Chavez at the hotel on October 21, 2013.

Prosecutors said Weems demanded cash from an employee at the front desk. Chavez heard the employee scream and ran from another area of the hotel to help her.

Weems and Chavez got into an altercation and prosecutors say Weems shot Chavez in the chest.

Video surveillance at the hotel showed the robbery and part of the altercation between Weems and Chavez.

Baker vetoes Prince George's County park tax hike

OXON HILL, Md. (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County Executive Rushern Baker Monday vetoed a 1.5% increase in property taxes passed by the County Council to fund parks and recreation.

"That's not the priority of the county," said Baker.

Instead Baker advocates that 100% of any property tax increase should go to a strategic plan to turn around Prince George's troubled school system.

County Council Chairman Mel Franklin said Baker's veto is "fiscally irresponsible" because it will cost more to end a structural deficit in parks spending if a tax hike is delayed.

Franklin predicted the veto will be overridden by the council immediately.
