Fiorella Pizzeria E Caffe Sails Into National Harbor

This story comes to us from Lisa Pinghera:National Harbor, MD [April 11, 2011] – It’s all about pizza and Italy at Fiorella Pizzeria e Caffé, a new concept by The Fireman Hospitality Group (FHG).  Slated to open at National Harbor Plaza in May 2011, Fiorella will offer over 30 artisanal thin-crust pizzas in a restaurant where the entire dining area was built in Italy. Shelly Fireman and The Fireman Hospitality Group, along with Tony Award winning designer John Lee Beatty, have created a new, truly Italian take on pizza.  For now, details of the design are ‘top secret’ and will be revealed when the restaurant opens in May.  Built in La Spezia, Italy, the walls, booths, tables, chairs, light fixtures, art and sculptures have been carefully packed and crated and are at sea, in-transit to America.  Once on site at National Harbor, a team of highly-skilled Italian craftsmen, carpenters and masons who have never before been to America will arrive to begin the installation.   They have been sworn to silence and will not be revealing any of the design details in advance of the opening. While traveling in Italy, Shelly discovered a 9 ft. statue of Bacchus (god of the grape harvest, winemaking, wine, ritual madness and ecstasy in Greek mythology) that had been residing at the Boboli Gardens in Florence since the  mid-500’s.  The life-size Bacchus is riding a tortoise from which water flows through its mouth into a marble bowl.  His imagination ignited, Shelly purchased a giant slab of Carrara marble and had craftsmen recreate the stone statue complete with a marble trough.  When the statue is in place next to the pizza kitchen in the dining room, fresh water will flow from the tortoise’s mouth into the marble bowl, in which the house-made mozzarella will float.  Bacchus, a tortoise and a floating mozzarella trough – who wouldn’t want a souviner photo next to that? As pizzas go, Fiorella’s will include the most traditional along with the healthiest of healthy pizzas, both vegan and vegetarian, offered with whole wheat crusts.  Cured meats, house-made sausages, imported and house-made cheeses and fresh shellfish will also adorn the pizzas. A seductive selection of sexy wines and international beers will be available for dining at the restaurant as well as take-out and delivery (within National Harbor only).  There will be outdoor seating in front of the restaurant where guests can enjoy their pizzas along with views of the Potomac River. Many years ago, celebrated graphic designer Milton Glaser created especially for Shelly the image featured on the logo and menu cover – a seductive woman dressed in a long floral coat peering over her right shoulder.  After some years, he finally told us who the image represented, but that, along with all of the design elements of Fiorella Pizzeria e Caffé, must for now remain a mystery.  One of the foremost graphic designers in the world, Milton Glaser was awarded the National Medal of the Arts in 2009 by President Obama and is the subject of the 2009 documentary film To Inform & Delight: The World of Milton Glaser.  Fireman Hospitality Group owns and operates eight highly-acclaimed restaurants in New York City, National Harbor, MD and Dubai, including Café Fiorello across from Lincoln Center, Trattoria Dell’Arte, Redeye Grill across from Carnegie Hall, Bond 45 Italian Steak & Seafood House in the Theater District, Bond 45 at National Harbor and three Brooklyn Diners, one across from Carnegie Hall, one in the heart of Times Square and a third Brooklyn Diner which has just opened in Dubai, with others to follow Fiorella Pizzeria e Caffé, located at 152 National Plaza, National Harbor, MD 20745, will be open daily for lunch and dinner from 11:00 am to 10:00 pm Sunday through Thursday and 11:00 am. to 11:00 pm. on Friday and Saturday.  Improper Dress Required!  Reservations are not required, but recommended for parties of six or more.  Take-out and delivery within the National Harbor complex are available.  Once open, the phone number will be 301-839-1811 or visit www.fiorellapizzeria.com
