"Safe Summer" Kick-off in Prince George's County

The Safe Summer program is a late night recreation initiative to promote healthy and positive lifestyles  through creative engagements and leadership training. From June 24th  to August 13th, the Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation is extending operating hours from 10 pm to midnight at twenty-two community facilities to give young people, ages 12-24, free access to their favorite recreational activities.  The “Teen Fest” event attracted over 400 participants from across Prince George’s County. Sponsored in part by WPGC and CBS Radio, it featured open mic performances, video games, rock climbing, campfires, swimming and roller skating, all free of charge for teens in attendance.

This year, the County will employ close to 2,200 youth who will work for County public and nonprofit agencies, the Parks and Recreation Department and the Workforce Development Division of the Economic Development Corporation. At the orientation, 165 youth, ranging in age from 15 to 21, participated in a human resources training as well as financial literacy workshops to help manage funds they will earn this summer. Prince George’s County  has operated the Summer Youth Employment Program since 2004.
