Prince George’s County will Benefit from $115 Million in Federal Stimulus to Boost Internet Speed

Prince George’s County’s elementary schools and other public buildings will soon have some of the fastest broadband Internet connections in the nation, thanks to a $115 million federal grant awarded to the One Maryland Broadband Network.

Over the next three years, the grant will enable the construction of high-speed fiber optic broadband connections to 115 County facilities, including every public elementary school and many libraries, fire stations, and other municipal facilities. The fiber network will also serve as a platform for private-sector companies to build “last-mile” connections to homes and businesses in areas of the County where residents are currently underserved.

Additional Performances Added to Cirque Du Soleil Schedule at National Harbor

Due to an overwhelming demand, six additional matinee performances have been added to the list of Cirque du Soleil shows at the National Harbor. An extra 4 p.m. performance will be held on September 30, October 7, 8, 14, 15 and 21.

Tickets are now available on Cirque du Soleil's site. There are specially priced family ticket packs as well.

The current performance schedule for Cirque du Soleil is as follows:

Tuesdays and Wednesday at 8:00 p.m.; Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 4:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.; and Sundays at 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m..  There are no performances on Mondays.  

 

Additionally, Cirque du Soleil, National Harbor and the National Children’s Museum are inviting all local youth in grades K-12 to participate in a photo contest!

Prince George's County Police Department Enjoys Hosting Annual Hispanic Festival

This past Sunday, September 19th, The Prince George’s County Police Department partnered with the Maryland Park and Planning Commission hosted the 29th Annual Hispanic Festival.

Adopt a Pet at the Prince George's County Community Animal Management Open House

On Saturday, September 18th from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Prince George’s County Department of Environmental Resources’ Animal Management Group is holding a Community Open House.  The event will take place at 3750 Brown Station Road in Upper Marlboro in their new facility.  The open house, which is free of charge, will focus on animal adoption, host local pet vendors, and also have entertainment for children.

The new Animal Services space is one-story, and spans 37,000-square feet.  The space has:

  • Interaction rooms
  • A spay/neuter clinic
  • An isolation/quarantine room
  • A puppy and kitten nursery
  • A cat mall and an exotic animal room.

Baker Secures Democratic Nomination For Prince George's County Exec.

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. (WUSA) -- The third time was the charm for former delegate Rushern Baker as he topped a filed of five to secure the Democratic nomination for Prince George's County Executive.

Although, returns were not final in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Baker maintained a 15 point lead over his closest competitor, Michael Jackson, the current Prince George's County Sheriff.

The men were vying to replace incumbent Prince George's County Executive Jack Johnson who is leaving office because of term limits.

Rushern Baker Headed For Prince George's County Executive Position

Rushern Baker III seems to be primed to become the next Prince George's County Executive, after dominating the Democratic primary that took place on Tuesday, September 14.

The primary featured five candidates, and Baker raked in over 38,000 votes after 97 percent of the total precincts had reported.

Other candidates included:

  • Michael Jackson- 28,627 votes with 97 percent reporting
  • Samuel Dean- 10,953 votes with 97 percent reporting
  • Gerron Levi- 6,551 votes with 97 percent reporting
  • Henry Turner Jr.- 3,006 votes with 97 percent reporting

There are no Republican candidates on the ballot, so all indications point to Baker being Prince George's County's newest County Executive.
